Toy Fair 2014: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & The Hobbit
Hot Bionicle NewsSaturday, February 22nd, 2014 at 10:29pm by Andrew, BZPower News Manager

The heroes in a half shell are back in green, with more sets based off the cartoon as well as sets based off the upcoming movie. Additionally, while the sets weren't on display, we do have some information about prices and piece counts for the upcoming Hobbit sets. Read on to check it out!

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 01

    79118 Karai Bike Escape

Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 02

    88 pieces. Age 5+.
    $12.99 (USD) $15.99 (CAD)
    Available in April

I keep telling myself I'm going to watch the new TV show, but haven't gotten around to it yet. So while I don't have much context as to who Karai is, I do like that this set has Leonardo, and I love the newsstand with the New York street signs!

    79119 Mutation Chamber Unleashed

Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 03 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 04

    196 pieces. Age 6+.
    $24.99 (USD) $29.99 (CAD)
    Available in April

This set has a fun action feature where the human dude goes in the top and falls into the 'ooze', making the monster thing show up at the bottom. It also comes with Raphael wearing some cool-looking armor.

    79120 T-Rawket Sky Strike

Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 05 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 06

    286 pieces. Age 6+.
    $34.99 (USD) $44.99 (CAD)
    Available in April

I like that this rocket plane is made out of a bunch of junk, including an I-80 road sign (a road I've spent many, many hours on). I also love Donatello's fighter jacket, and the bat-thing with a brainy head looks creepy.

    79121 Turtle Sub Undersea Chase

Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 07 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 08 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 09 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 10 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 11 Toy Fair 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 12

    684 pieces. Age 7+.
    $59.99 (USD) $74.99 (CAD)
    Available in April

This turtle shaped submarine is sweet! It has space inside for all of the turtles, even if it only comes with two. Also, when you roll it across the ground, the front flippers move to simulate swimming! You also get what appear to be two Krang exo-suits and their own mini-submersible thing. It looks like a fun set!

    79115 Turtle Van Takedown

    368 pieces. Age 6+.
    $39.99 (USD) $49.99 (CAD)
    Available in July

We weren't allowed to take pictures of the sets based on the movie, but I can still talk about them. This one features the turtle-mobile as well as Michelangelo, Raphael, a human dude, and a foot soldier. While the van is cool, I really don't like the look of the movie turtles. Their shells are too high on their backs and their faces are just ugly.

    79116 Big Rig Snow Getaway

    743 pieces. Age 7+.
    $69.99 (USD) $89.99 (CAD)
    Available in July

This set comes with a tractor trailer and a SUV. For minifigs you get Raphael, Leonardo, someone I'm hoping is April O'Neil, and three bad guys. The vehicles don't look bad, but again the turtles just don't look right.

    79117 Turtle Lair Invasion

    888 pieces. Age 7+.
    $99.99 (USD) $119.99 (CAD)
    Available in July

This is a pretty elaborate set similar in principle to the turtle lair we got last year. It appears to contain Splinter, Leonardo, Donatello, Shredder, and two foot soldiers. Splinter uses the short legs and is grey instead of brown. The turtles are still ugly. The set itself has lots of play features, but I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to buy any of the movie sets.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

    Toy Fair 2014 Hobbit 01

The sets weren't on display, but I'm going to give you my predictions for what they are. Someone remind me to check how close I was in October!

    79015 Hobbit 5

    101 pieces. Age 8+.
    $14.99 (USD) $15.99 (CAD)
    Available in October

This is probably going to be a battle pack like Dul Guldur Ambush that will combine with the largest set. It'll be part of the Battle of Five Armies and I'm hoping it features some of Dain's dwarves from the Iron Hills against some goblins and maybe a warg.

    79016 Hobbit 6

    313 pieces. Age 8+.
    $29.99 (USD) $34.99 (CAD)
    Available in October

This will tie into the additional material they've been adding. I'm thinking possibly the exile of the Necromancer, featuring at least some of the White Council - Galadriel had better make an appearance!

    79017 Hobbit 7

    471 pieces. Age 8+.
    $59.99 (USD) $84.99 (CAD)
    Available in October

We need a set with Smaug, and I'm hoping the $60 set is the one. I'm picturing a raft or pier that was part of Lake Town with Bard and one or two bowmen. The rest of the pieces need to be dedicated to the dragon to make him as magnificent and horrible as he needs to be.

    79018 Hobbit 8

    858 pieces. Age 8+.
    $129.99 (USD) $119.99 (CAD)
    Available in October

This will be the Battle of Five Armies, centering on the gates of Erebor. It should have Thorin, Dain, Azog, Beorn in bear form, and at least one warg and one eagle. Hopefully there will be some other combatants, like some elves and more goblins. At $130, it needs to be a super-impressive set and I hope that LEGO delivers.

While the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle TV show sets look pretty cool, the movie sets leave much to be desired. And we still don't know what to expect from The Hobbit! For more Toy Fair 2014 coverage, you can head on over to our landing page and check out the other themes. There's a little more for us to look at, so check back soon, here on BZPower!
