    Toy Fair 2017: Star Wars
Hot Bionicle NewsSunday, February 19th, 2017 at 7:03pm by Andrew, BZPower News Manager

Next in our Toy Fair coverage is... more Star Wars! The System-scale sets for this theme from a long time ago have been super-popular since 1999 (coming up on twenty years!) and this year looks to have a good mix of sets from all the movies, Rebels, and the Freemaker Adventures, plus the upcoming Episode VIII. Let's take a look and see what we've got in store for 2017!

    Star Wars

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 02

    75160 U-Wing Microfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 40

    109 pieces. Age 6+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

I like the pilot minifig for the U-Wing, especially the dual-molded helmet. Otherwise this ship doesn't do much for me at microfighter scale.

    75161 TIE Striker Microfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 41

    88 pieces. Age 6+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This set looks a little boring, and the minifig isn't even that exciting. It does a decent job representing the on-screen ship in micro form, but that's about it.

    75162 Y-Wing Microfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 42

    90 pieces. Age 6+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This is probably my favorite of the Rogue One microfighters, and that's mainly for nostalgia reasons. It does a decent job looking like a Y-Wing with the exception of those flick-fire missiles.

    75163 Krennic's Imperial Shuttle Microfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 43

    78 pieces. Age 6+
    $9.99 (USD) $12.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

Why doesn't Krennic's shuttle come with a Krennic minifig? I suppose this could be useful if you're looking to build an Imperial navy, but the build doesn't do a lot for me.

    75164 Rebel Trooper Battle Pack

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 44

    120 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

I like the variety of figures this set provides, and it definitely looks like it will be great for people trying to make dioramas of the attack on Scarif.

    75165 Imperial Trooper Battle Pack

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 45

    112 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

With two Deathtroopers and two Stormtroopers, this looks like the perfect Imperial battle pack, even if the walker build is a bit weak.

75166 First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 35

    117 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

This is a solid-looking Force Awakens-themed pack. Good selection of figs, plus an awesome new shield piece make for a set that has a lot of value for buying multiples.

75167 Bounty Hunter Speeder Bike Battle Pack

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 05 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 06

    125 pieces. Age 6+
    $14.99 (USD) $16.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

Unfortunately the final version of this set wasn't on display but it looks like a great set if not much of a battle pack. Most people probably have at least one Boba Fett minifig, but this set looks to give us four of the other five bounty hunters from the Executor's bridge in The Empire Strikes Back. Bossk, Dengar, and IG-88 have been seen before a couple of times, but if the other droid is 4-LOM, that marks his first appearance in a set! Now all we need is Zuckuss for the collection to be complete.

    75168 Yoda's Jedi Starfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 03

    262 pieces. Age 8+
    $24.99 (USD) $29.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

A callback to the Clone Wars TV show, this modified Eta-2 starfighter does a decent job capturing the look of the ship from the series, although the cockpit is a bit off. Still though, the fact that we're getting a set from the Netflix-only final season of the show is awesome, and I hope we see more in the future.

    75169 Duel on Naboo

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 04

    208 pieces. Age 7+
    $24.99 (USD) $29.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This set takes us back to The Phantom Menace and reminds me of the Carbon Freezing Chamber set in its implementation. It seems like a good idea, but much too small, although it has some interesting play features and some minifigs we haven't seen in a while.

    75170 The Phantom

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 25

    269 pieces. Age 7+
    $29.99 (USD) $39.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This is the only set we're getting based on Rebels this year, which I think is a bit of a shame (if only because I want Sabine and the Darksaber). It's a good one though, with Admiral Thrawn in minifig form for the first time and a blind Kanan. The set itself is solid build with a nice color scheme and is instantly recognizable as the Separatist shuttle from the Clone Wars.

    75171 Battle on Scarif

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 49 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 50 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 51

    419 pieces. Age 8+
    $49.99 (USD) $64.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

Here we've got a little Rogue One playset which is a little disappointing since it doesn't actually capture a scene from the movie. The model itself is solid though, and could be used as a start for your own Rogue One diorama. It's also nice to get Jyn in the Imperial uniform.

    75172 Y-Wing Starfighter

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 46 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 47 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 48

    691 pieces. Age 8+
    $59.99 (USD) $74.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This is one of my favorite Star Wars sets that was on display, like the microfighter version for a lot of nostalgia reasons. This is supposed to be a Rogue One set, based on the minifigure choice, and getting a new Mon Calamari and another new alien is awesome. The fighter itself looks great and seems ready to bomb the Death Star or attack Scarif.

    75173 Luke's Landspeeder

    149 pieces. Age 7+
    $19.99 (USD) $24.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    75174 Desert Skiff Escape

    277 pieces. Age 7+
    $29.99 (USD) $39.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    75175 A-Wing Starfighter

    358 pieces. Age 8+
    $39.99 (USD) $49.99 (CAD)
    Available in March

This set was unfortunately not on display.

    75178 Jakku Quadjumper

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 07 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 08 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 09 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 10 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 11 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 12 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 13 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 14 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 15

    457 pieces. Age 8+
    $49.99 (USD) $64.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

I'm just going to say that it's a little ridiculous that we get a set of a vehicle that appears on screen for all of five seconds before we get one based on Starkiller Base or the Finalizer. That said, I like how it looks, I like the dark orange parts, and I think the minifig choice is reasonable.

    75180 Rathtar Escape

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 16 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 17 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 18 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 19 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 20 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 21

    836 pieces. Age 8+
    $79.99 (USD) $99.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

This set, on the other hand, is a perfect addition to the Force Awakens collection. The Eravana is too big of a ship to appear in minifig-scale so instead we get a part of the interior along with two Rathtars, Bala-Tik, and two Guavian Death Gang soldiers. Those parts alone make this worth the purchase for the hardcore Star Wars collectors, but the set itself looks to be packed with play features too.

    75182 Republic Fighter Tank

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 36

    305 pieces. Age 8+
    $24.99 (USD) $29.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

Here we've got a Clone Wars-era vehicle that technically isn't even part of the official canon, having never appeared in the show. I don't think many fans will complain though, especially since we get an Aayla Secura minifigure and a cool-looking machine of war!

    75183 Darth Vader Transformation

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 37 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 38 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 39

    282 pieces. Age 7+
    $24.99 (USD) $29.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

This set takes us to the end of the Clone Wars and the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith to the pivotal moment when Darth Vader was born. It's a scene that has been portrayed in a set before, but this one does a solid job of marrying the play feature with some good aesthetics. The figures and droids look pretty good too. The only fault of this set is that now I'm thinking of James Earl Jones screaming, 'Noooooo!'

75184 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 22 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 23 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 24

    309 pieces. Age 6+
    $39.99 (USD) $49.99 (CAD)
    Available in September

The Advent calendar has been a staple of the Star Wars line for years now, and 2017 will be no different. This one appears to draw a lot from Rebels, The Force Awakens, and Rogue One with a variety of figures and miniature vehicles. The standout is a snowboarding BB-8, which is cool but doesn't seem like something you couldn't make yourself.

    75185 Tracker I

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 26 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 27 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 28 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 29

    557 pieces. Age 8+
    $69.99 (USD) $89.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

The Tracker I is one of two sets this year based on the Freemaker Adventures, a LEGO Star Wars animated series. I haven't been keeping up much with it, but the ship does look pretty awesome, with a cool triangular design. Also, I don't know who the gunmetal dude with the two lightsabers is, but he looks like an awesome minifigure.

    75186 The Arrowhead

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 30 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 31 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 32 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 33 Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 34

    775 pieces. Age 8+
    $89.99 (USD) $109.99 (CAD)
    Available in June

I must say I was a little surprised that the largest Star Wars set on display this year was only $90 and that it was from the Freemaker Adventures and not the main continuity. Perhaps that implies we're getting some very large Last Jedi sets, but we'll have to wait and see on that. The Arrowhead looks well-designed and solid, with a large interior to fit all the characters and a variety of play features. I also really like the hunched over Mon Calamari minifig. It looks nice and big but I'm not sure how many will want to pick it up.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Toy Fair 2017 Star Wars 01

Of course everyone wanted to know about sets based on Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, but LEGO wasn't talking. We know there will be more System sets and probably four buildable figures, but we'll have to wait until this fall most likely before we see any of them.

Without the sets for the new movie, this year's Star Wars assortment seemed a little light. A lot of the sets are great, but it feels a bit like it's missing some iconic elements to tie it together or at least a large $100+ set to be the icing on the cake. There's definitely more than a couple that I want to pick up though, that's for sure. What do you think? Let us know in the Talkback and be sure to go vote for what other themes you'd like to see us cover next. Of course, don't forget to check out all of our Toy Fair 2017 coverage right here!
